Mandaikadu Hindu-Christian clashes

· Mandaikadu

Tensions between Hindus and Christians in Kanyakumari district escalated during the Mandaikadu temple festival, leading to police firing and deaths.

In the early 1980s Kanyakumari district saw recurring tensions between Hindu and Christian communities, many of them among fishing and coastal populations. On 1 March 1982, during the festival at the Mandaikadu Bhagavathi Amman temple, clashes broke out. Police opened fire and several people were killed, and violence spread to other parts of the district. The state government appointed a commission of inquiry into the disturbances.
