Following Gandhian ideas of education, G. Ramachandran and T. S. Soundaram established the Gandhigram Rural Institute.

G. Ramachandran and T. S. Soundaram, a married couple, set up the institute in 1956 at Gandhigram, close to Dindigul. Its teaching was based on Mahatma Gandhi's Nai Talim system, which tied education to work in villages. The University Grants Commission recognised it as a deemed university in 1976. Its focus is on cooperation, rural development and related subjects.
