After Rajaji's resignation, K. Kamaraj became Chief Minister of Madras State and served for over nine years.

C. Rajagopalachari resigned as Chief Minister amid opposition within the Congress legislature party to his education scheme. K. Kamaraj, president of the state Congress, was chosen to succeed him and took office on 13 April 1954. His government dropped the Modified Scheme of Elementary Education, expanded schooling and promoted irrigation and industrial projects. Kamaraj remained Chief Minister until 2 October 1963, when he resigned under the Kamaraj Plan.
