First general election; Rajaji forms government
· Chennai

After the first general election left Congress short of a majority, C. Rajagopalachari was sworn in as Chief Minister of Madras State.
The first elections to the Madras Legislative Assembly under the Constitution were held in 1951-52. The Indian National Congress emerged as the largest party but did not win an outright majority, while communist and other opposition parties performed strongly. C. Rajagopalachari, who had not contested the election, was invited to form the government and was sworn in on 10 April 1952. He was nominated to the Legislative Council, a decision that drew criticism at the time.
