The DMK, allied with Indira Gandhi's Congress, won a landslide in the first Assembly election held under the name Tamil Nadu.

In the 1971 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, the DMK led a front allied with Indira Gandhi's Congress, which did not contest Assembly seats in exchange for Lok Sabha seats. The DMK won 184 seats with about 48.6 percent of the vote, the largest single-party tally in the state's history. The opposition front of Kamaraj's Congress (O) and Rajaji's Swatantra Party won only a small number of seats. M. Karunanidhi continued as Chief Minister.
