Months after the DMK and Congress swept the Lok Sabha polls, the AIADMK won the May 1980 assembly election, bringing MGR back as Chief Minister.

Following the dismissal of the AIADMK ministry, Tamil Nadu voted in its seventh assembly election on 28 May 1980. In January, the DMK and Congress (I) had carried the Lok Sabha contest, and they fought this poll as allies, yet they could not win. A majority went instead to the alliance headed by the AIADMK. On 9 June 1980 M. G. Ramachandran took the oath as Chief Minister, his second time in the post. The outcome revealed that voters in the state were choosing differently in parliamentary and assembly contests.
