The Congress (Indira) and DMK alliance won 37 of Tamil Nadu's 39 Lok Sabha seats, a setback for M. G. Ramachandran's ruling AIADMK.
In the 1980 Lok Sabha election, Indira Gandhi's Congress (Indira) allied with the DMK in Tamil Nadu. The alliance won 37 of the 39 seats, and the ruling AIADMK won only Gobichettipalayam and Sivakasi. The result was widely seen as an upset for M. G. Ramachandran and helped return Indira Gandhi to power as Prime Minister. Soon afterwards the Union government dismissed the AIADMK state government, although the AIADMK won the assembly election that followed in mid-1980.
