Congress-AIADMK alliance wins 38 of 39 Lok Sabha seats
· Chennai
Months after losing the state election, the reunited AIADMK and its ally the Congress won 38 of Tamil Nadu's 39 Lok Sabha seats.
In the 1989 Lok Sabha election, the Indian National Congress and the AIADMK, now reunited under J. Jayalalithaa, won 38 of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu. The ruling DMK, part of the National Front, failed to win a single seat. Nationally, however, the National Front formed the government under V. P. Singh, and DMK Rajya Sabha member Murasoli Maran became a Union minister. The result marked the start of INC-AIADMK dominance in the state's Lok Sabha contests until 1996.
