DMK allies with the BJP; NDA wins 26 seats in Tamil Nadu

· Chennai

With the AIADMK out of the NDA, the DMK allied with the BJP for the first time and the NDA won 26 of Tamil Nadu's 39 Lok Sabha seats.

After the AIADMK withdrew support and the Vajpayee government fell in April 1999, fresh Lok Sabha elections were held. In Tamil Nadu the DMK left the United Front and allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the National Democratic Alliance for the first time. The NDA won 26 of the 39 seats, while the AIADMK, now allied with the Congress, lost ground compared with 1998. The DMK became part of the Vajpayee government at the Centre for the next five years.
