First Uzhavar Sandhai farmers' market opens in Madurai

· Madurai

Madurai hosted the first market of the DMK government's Uzhavar Sandhai scheme, where farmers could sell their produce straight to buyers.

In 1999 the M. Karunanidhi government launched the Uzhavar Sandhai, or farmers' market, scheme. Under it the state ran market spaces in which growers offered fruit and vegetables to consumers without intermediaries, so that farmers earned better prices. Madurai saw the inauguration of the first such market on 14 November 1999. Towns throughout Tamil Nadu later gained markets of their own.
