Attack on the Dinakaran office in Madurai

· Madurai

After Dinakaran ran a survey on Karunanidhi's political heir, its Madurai office was firebombed and three people were killed.

Dinakaran, a newspaper of Kalanidhi Maran's Sun Group, carried an opinion poll in May 2007 asking who should succeed M. Karunanidhi politically; M. K. Stalin led M. K. Alagiri by a wide margin. Alagiri's supporters staged protests through southern Tamil Nadu on 9 May 2007, and in Madurai a mob threw stones and firebombs at the building that housed Dinakaran, Sun TV and Tamil Murasu. A security guard and two press workers lost their lives. The district court later acquitted all seventeen people the CBI had charged. In the furore Dayanidhi Maran quit the Union Cabinet, and a rift opened between the DMK and the Maran family.
