A permanent bench of the Madras High Court began functioning in Madurai to serve the southern districts.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court began working on 24 July 2004 under a presidential order establishing a permanent bench at Madurai. It hears cases from the southern and central districts of Tamil Nadu, which had long demanded a court closer than Chennai. The bench sits in its own court complex in Madurai. It made access to the High Court easier for litigants in more than a dozen districts.
