Madras Day, held each 22 August, was first celebrated in Chennai, recalling the 1639 acquisition of the land where the city developed.

Journalists Vincent D'Souza and Sashi Nair, together with historian S. Muthiah, came up with Madras Day in 2004. It falls on 22 August, generally accepted as the day in 1639 when East India Company factors Andrew Cogan and Francis Day bought Madraspatnam. Around five events made up the first edition; over time the programme of talks, walks, quizzes and exhibitions stretched to a week and then a whole month. The celebration has helped raise public interest in Chennai's history and heritage.
