Organised by the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India, the first Madras Book Fair later developed into the yearly Chennai Book Fair.

BAPASI, the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India, a body of Tamil Nadu publishers, staged the first Madras Book Fair between 14 and 24 December 1977. The venue was the Madrasa-i-Azam school, and 22 stalls took part. Held every year after that, it evolved into the Chennai Book Fair, which ranks among India's biggest book fairs and is a key date for Tamil publishers.
