The Music Academy was founded in Madras following the 1927 Congress session and became a leading institution for Carnatic music.

The idea of a music academy arose out of the All India Music Conference held by the Indian National Congress in Madras in 1927, and a first music festival was held in December 1927. The Music Academy was formally established in August 1928, with E. Krishna Iyer among its founders. It began holding an annual December conference and concert series. Its festival grew into the Madras Music Season, a major event in the cultural calendar of the city.
