South Indian Railway strike

Workers of the South Indian Railway struck against planned layoffs of over 3,100 employees, disrupting transport across South India.

The South Indian Railway Company planned to lay off more than 3,100 workers, citing new machinery in its workshops at Podanur, Negapatam and Trichinopoly. The South Indian Railway Workers Union called a general strike that lasted from 29 June to 2 August 1928. The strike disrupted movement of people and goods and saw violent incidents. The government responded with a crackdown, arresting leaders including Singaravelu Chetty and withdrawing recognition of the union. The Madras government described it as the most important event of the year.
