Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway strike

· Perambur

Railway workshop workers at Perambur began a strike against retrenchment that spread across the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway.

The Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company had laid off workers in 1931, provoking protests. On 24 October 1932 a major strike broke out in the mechanical workshops at Perambur, demanding the reinstatement of 93 dismissed workers. Workers at Arakkonam and other centres joined in the following weeks. The strike lasted until 8 January 1933 and was largely non-violent.
