2005 Chennai floods and relief camp stampedes

· Chennai

Heavy north-east monsoon rain flooded Chennai, and two stampedes at relief distribution camps killed more than 50 people.

Heavy rain during the north-east monsoon of November and December 2005 caused some of the worst floods Chennai had seen, damaging many houses. Two stampedes occurred at camps where food and money were being distributed to flood victims, one in November and one on 18 December 2005 at MGR Nagar. More than 50 people were killed in the two stampedes. The disaster raised questions about crowd management during relief work and about urban flooding in the city.
