Extremely heavy north-east monsoon rains flooded Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore, killing hundreds of people.

Heavy rainfall in November and early December 2015 caused severe flooding in Chennai and the neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore. Large parts of Chennai were submerged in early December, including after water was released from the Chembarambakkam reservoir, and the airport and suburban train services were shut. Hundreds of people died in Tamil Nadu. Volunteers and the armed forces carried out large rescue operations. The floods prompted debate on encroachment of lakes and drainage in Chennai's growth.
