The first stretch of Chennai Metro, between Koyambedu and Alandur, opened to passengers.

Chennai Metro Rail began passenger service on 29 June 2015 on an elevated stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur. The project, a joint venture of the Union and state governments, was planned under the DMK government and opened under the AIADMK government. Further sections, including underground lines and a link to the airport, opened in the following years. A larger second phase was later taken up to extend the network across the city.
