India's first elevated urban railway came into service when the opening section of Chennai's Mass Rapid Transit System, linking Beach and Chepauk, began running.

Work on the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System got under way in 1991. Trains first ran on 16 November 1995, covering the initial stretch between Chennai Beach and Chepauk. No other elevated railway line in India was in operation before it. Services reached Thirumayilai in 1997, and the route was afterwards pushed further south in the direction of Velachery.
