Chess player Viswanathan Anand of Madras became India's first grandmaster.

Viswanathan Anand, who grew up in Madras, earned his final grandmaster norm at an international tournament in Coimbatore in late 1987 and became India's first grandmaster in 1988. He was 18 years old. The same year he received the Padma Shri. His success is widely credited with sparking a chess boom in Tamil Nadu, which went on to produce many grandmasters.
