M. G. Ramachandran, the former Chief Minister who had died in December 1987, was honoured posthumously with the Bharat Ratna, India's top civilian award.

The Bharat Ratna for 1988 went to M. G. Ramachandran, the screen actor who founded the AIADMK and led Tamil Nadu as Chief Minister from 1977 until he died on 24 December 1987. Because of his death, the honour was given posthumously. In 1971 he had won the National Film Award for Best Actor. No earlier Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had received the Bharat Ratna.
