Kidney failure put Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran in hospital, and he later had a kidney transplant in New York.

M. G. Ramachandran fell ill at an event in Thanjavur in early October 1984 and was admitted to hospital on 5 October, suffering from breathing and kidney trouble. On 5 November 1984 he was taken by air to the United States. Surgeons in New York gave him a transplanted kidney, donated by his niece, on 19 December 1984. While he was away, Indira Gandhi was assassinated and both national and state polls were brought forward. For the remainder of his life his health stayed delicate.
