AIADMK wins 1984 election while MGR is in hospital abroad
Contesting from a hospital in the United States, MGR led the AIADMK-Congress alliance to victory in the 1984 assembly election.
The eighth Tamil Nadu assembly election was held on 24 December 1984, alongside the Lok Sabha election that followed Indira Gandhi's assassination. The AIADMK contested in alliance with Rajiv Gandhi's Congress. M. G. Ramachandran filed his nomination for the Andipatti constituency while still being treated in the United States, and campaign videos of him in hospital were widely shown. The alliance won a large majority, and he was sworn in for a third term after returning to Tamil Nadu in 1985.
