Tamil Nadu pioneered state maternity benefits in India with the Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme, introduced in 1987. The scheme gives cash assistance to poor pregnant women to support nutrition and institutional delivery. The amount of assistance was raised several times by later governments of both Dravidian parties. A 2019 survey found that 76 percent of eligible women in the state had used the benefit.
