Moovalur Ramamirtham marriage assistance scheme

· Chennai

The DMK government started cash assistance for the marriage of daughters of poor families, named after reformer Moovalur Ramamirtham.

In 1989 the Government of Tamil Nadu instituted the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammal Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme to give financial help to poor women at the time of marriage. It was named after the Self-Respect Movement activist who campaigned against the devadasi system. The Karunanidhi government also enacted measures giving financial assistance for widow remarriage and inter-caste marriages. The marriage scheme was later revised with gold for the thirumangalyam in 2011 and converted into the Pudhumai Penn higher education assistance in 2022.
