Chief Minister's Girl Child Protection Scheme
· Chennai

The state began depositing money in the names of girl children in poor families to counter gender discrimination and keep girls in school.
The Chief Minister's Girl Child Protection Scheme was introduced in Tamil Nadu in 1992, when J. Jayalalithaa was Chief Minister. The government makes a fixed deposit in the name of girl children in eligible families with only one or two daughters, payable when the girl grows up. Its aims are to prevent gender discrimination, promote enrolment and retention of girls in school and discourage marriage before 18. Under the revised scheme for girls born from August 2011, Rs. 50,000 is deposited for a single girl child and Rs. 25,000 each for two girls.
