Eggs added to the noon meal

· Chennai

Karunanidhi announced an egg once every two weeks with the noon meal, the first step towards eggs on every school day by 2010.

In 1989 Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced that schoolchildren would receive one egg with the nutritious noon meal once every two weeks. The provision became weekly in 1998, two eggs a week from 15 July 2006 and three a week from 15 July 2007, with bananas for children who do not eat eggs from 2008. From 2010 children received an egg on all five school days. The change benefited around 58 lakh children covered by the noon meal scheme.
