The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park and a 10 km buffer zone along the Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi coast were declared a biosphere reserve.

In 1989 the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park and its 10 km buffer zone were declared a biosphere reserve. The reserve covers the islands and coastal waters between Rameswaram and Thoothukudi. The area supports fishing communities along with about 117 species of hard coral, dugongs, dolphins and visiting sea turtles. Conservation in the reserve has had to balance marine protection with the livelihoods of local fishermen.
