A tiger reserve was formed in the southern Western Ghats by joining the Kalakkad and Mundanthurai wildlife sanctuaries.

In 1988 the Kalakkad and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuaries, each dating from 1962, were merged into the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. Its forests belong to the South Western Ghats montane rain forests and fall within Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. Among Tamil Nadu's protected areas only one is larger, and the reserve forms part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve.
