A road bridge parallel to the Pamban railway bridge opened, giving Rameswaram island its first road link to the mainland.

Until 1988 the Pamban railway bridge, opened in 1914, was the only surface transport link between Rameswaram on Pamban Island and mainland India. In 1988 a road bridge was opened parallel to the railway bridge across the Palk Strait. The road link made Rameswaram, a major pilgrimage town, accessible by road and supported the fishing and tourism economy of the island.
