The Pamban Bridge, India's first sea bridge, opened, linking Rameswaram on Pamban Island to the mainland by rail.

The Pamban Bridge was opened for traffic on 24 February 1914, connecting Rameswaram on Pamban Island with mainland India. It was India's first sea bridge and remained the country's longest until 2010. A metre-gauge railway ran across it, carrying pilgrims to Rameswaram and passengers on the route towards Dhanushkodi and the ferry to Ceylon. The line was converted to broad gauge in 2007.
