Cauvery arbitration award on the Kannambadi dam
Vaishu2, Public domain · Wikimedia Commons

Arbitration under the 1892 agreement let Mysore build a Kannambadi dam smaller than it had planned; an appeal by Madras led to the 1924 agreement.

Mysore prepared plans in 1910 for a Kannambadi dam that would hold 41.5 tmcft of Cauvery water. This drew objections from the Madras Presidency, which had its own dam at Mettur in view. The British government sent the dispute to arbitration under the 1892 agreement. Announced on 12 May 1914, the award permitted Mysore a dam of 11 tmcft capacity. Madras contested the ruling, and the dispute ultimately produced a fresh agreement in 1924.
