The 50-year Madras-Mysore agreement of 1924 on Kaveri waters expired, opening a long inter-state dispute with Karnataka.

The sharing of Kaveri waters rested on agreements of 1892 and 1924 between the Madras Presidency and the Kingdom of Mysore. In 1971 petitions were filed in the Supreme Court seeking a tribunal, and in 1972 the riparian states agreed to talks and a fact-finding committee. After the 1924 agreement expired in 1974, Karnataka demanded a larger share. In August 1976 the states reached a tentative understanding, but the dispute continued for decades.
