Cauvery tribunal issues interim award

The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal directed Karnataka to release 205 TMC ft of water a year to Tamil Nadu.

On 25 June 1991 the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal gave an interim award based on average inflows into Tamil Nadu over a ten-year period. It directed Karnataka to ensure the release of 205 thousand million cubic feet of water annually at the Mettur dam. Karnataka issued an ordinance seeking to override the award, but the Supreme Court struck it down. The award was gazetted by the Union government on 11 December 1991.
