Anti-Tamil violence in Karnataka over Cauvery award

· Bangalore

Mobs attacked Tamils in Bangalore, Mysore and other parts of southern Karnataka after the Cauvery interim award was gazetted.

After the Union government gazetted the Cauvery tribunal's interim award on 11 December 1991, protests in Karnataka turned into violence against Tamil residents. On 12 and 13 December mobs attacked Tamil homes, shops and people, mainly in Bangalore and Mysore. Many Tamil families fled to Tamil Nadu. The violence deepened bitterness between the two states over the Kaveri dispute.
