Jayalalithaa fasts on the Marina over Cauvery water
Seeking Cauvery water from Karnataka for the kuruvai crop, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa went on a fast of about 80 hours beside the MGR memorial.
Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa sat on a fast close to the MGR memorial on the Marina Beach in Madras in July 1993, keeping it up for roughly 80 hours. Her demand was that Karnataka let Cauvery water flow for the kuruvai crop in the delta, as the tribunal's interim award of 1991 required. Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao dispatched V. C. Shukla, the Union Minister of Water Resources, to Chennai. Once Shukla assured her that the Centre would form committees to see the award carried out, she called off the fast.
