Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal constituted

On a Supreme Court direction, the Union government set up a tribunal to adjudicate the Kaveri water dispute between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.
Repeated negotiations between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the sharing of Kaveri waters failed between 1968 and 1990. In 1983 a Tamil Nadu farmers' association petitioned the Supreme Court for a tribunal. On 4 May 1990 the Supreme Court directed the Union government to set one up, and the three-member Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was constituted on 2 June 1990 under Justice Chittatosh Mookerjee. The tribunal became the main forum for the dispute for the next 17 years.
