Following the Supreme Court's final Cauvery verdict, the Union government created the Cauvery Water Management Authority.

In February 2018 the Supreme Court gave its final verdict on the sharing of Cauvery waters and directed the creation of a scheme to implement it. Tamil Nadu had long demanded a permanent body to ensure that Karnataka released water as ordered. As per the court's orders, the Union government constituted the Cauvery Water Management Authority on 1 June 2018. The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee was set up about three weeks later to oversee day-to-day releases.
