The Supreme Court reduced Tamil Nadu's share of Cauvery water slightly and ordered a scheme for implementation, leading to the Cauvery Water Management Authority.

On 16 February 2018 the Supreme Court decided the appeals against the 2007 tribunal award. It reduced Tamil Nadu's annual allocation from Karnataka at the inter-state border and increased Karnataka's share, citing Bengaluru's drinking water needs. The court directed the Union government to frame a scheme to implement the award. Protests in Tamil Nadu over delays led to the creation of the Cauvery Water Management Authority later in 2018.
