Cyclone Ockhi caused heavy damage in Kanyakumari district and many fishermen out at sea were lost.

Cyclone Ockhi formed rapidly near Sri Lanka and passed close to Kanyakumari district on 30 November 2017 with little warning to fishermen. It caused widespread damage to houses, trees, power lines and plantations in the district. Many fishermen from Kanyakumari and Kerala who were at sea were killed or went missing. Fishing communities protested over the delayed search and rescue and the warning system.
