Cyclone Gaja crossed the coast near Vedaranyam, killing dozens and destroying coconut groves, homes and boats in the delta districts.

Cyclone Gaja made landfall near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district in the early hours of 16 November 2018. It caused severe damage in Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai districts. Dozens of people were killed, and huge numbers of coconut and other trees, houses, power lines and fishing boats were destroyed. Farmers in the delta faced long-term losses because coconut plantations take years to recover.
