Cyclone Vardah hits Chennai

Cyclone Vardah made landfall near Chennai, uprooting thousands of trees and cutting power and communication across the city.

Cyclone Vardah crossed the coast near Chennai on 12 December 2016 with very strong winds. It uprooted a very large number of trees in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts and damaged power lines, leaving many areas without electricity for days. Several people were killed in Tamil Nadu. It was among the strongest cyclones to strike Chennai directly in decades.
