Free bus rides for senior citizens in Chennai

· Chennai

Senior citizens in Chennai were allowed ten free rides a month on ordinary city buses, using tokens issued by the transport corporation.

In February 2016 Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced in the Assembly a free bus travel scheme for senior citizens, effective from 24 February, her birthday. People aged 60 and above in Chennai could travel free on non-air-conditioned Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses ten times a month, using monthly tokens. The scheme was to begin in Chennai and be extended to other cities depending on the response. Jayalalithaa said it completed the promises made in the AIADMK's 2011 manifesto.
