Udumalaipettai honour killing of Shankar

· Udumalaipettai

Dalit youth Shankar was hacked to death in a busy street in Udumalaipettai for marrying Kausalya, a woman from a dominant caste.

On 13 March 2016 Shankar, a Dalit engineering student, and his wife Kausalya were attacked by hired assailants near the Udumalaipettai bus stand in Tiruppur district, eight months after their inter-caste marriage. Shankar died on the spot and Kausalya survived her injuries. A sessions court sentenced six people, including Kausalya's father Chinnasamy, to death. The Madras High Court later acquitted Chinnasamy for want of evidence and reduced the other death sentences to life terms of 25 years. Kausalya went on to become a prominent anti-caste activist.
