Former Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi died in Chennai and was buried at Marina Beach after a High Court ruling.

M. Karunanidhi, who led the DMK for about five decades and served five terms as Chief Minister, died at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai on 7 August 2018. The state government initially refused space for his burial at Marina Beach, and the DMK went to the Madras High Court, which allowed the burial there next to C. N. Annadurai's memorial. Large crowds attended the funeral on 8 August. M. K. Stalin was elected DMK president later that month.
