A Bengaluru special court convicted Jayalalithaa, forcing her to resign; the Karnataka High Court acquitted her in 2015 and she returned as Chief Minister.

On 27 September 2014 a special court in Bengaluru convicted J. Jayalalithaa, V. K. Sasikala and two others of acquiring assets disproportionate to known income during her 1991-1996 term. Jayalalithaa received a four-year sentence and a fine of Rs. 100 crore, was disqualified as a legislator, and O. Panneerselvam became Chief Minister for the second time. In May 2015 the Karnataka High Court acquitted her, and she was sworn in again on 23 May 2015. The Karnataka government appealed to the Supreme Court.
