Jayalalithaa assets case transferred to Bangalore

· Bengaluru

On a DMK petition, the Supreme Court moved the disproportionate assets trial of J. Jayalalithaa from Chennai to a special court in Bangalore.

J. Jayalalithaa was accused of amassing assets disproportionate to her known income during her first term as Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996. After she returned to power, several prosecution witnesses retracted their earlier statements. In February 2003 DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan asked the Supreme Court to move the trial out of Tamil Nadu to ensure a fair hearing, and in November 2003 the court ordered it transferred to Bangalore. The trial began in a special court there in March 2005 and ended with her conviction in September 2014.
