A project to pipe water from Veeranam Lake to Chennai, first conceived in 1967, was completed during a severe water shortage.

The idea of supplying Chennai with water from Veeranam Lake in Cuddalore district was conceived in 1967 under Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai and taken up under M. Karunanidhi. The project was completed in 2004 under Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. At the time the lake had run dry, so water could not be drawn from it immediately. The project became part of Chennai's long-running efforts to secure drinking water from distant sources.
